Having been endlessly frustrated with the service I got from BT, and their inability to provide the setup I really needed, it was time for a new approach. Having used Skype, I'd previously dismissed VOIP as the way to go - our home adsl is a mere 512k, being so far from the exchange, and call quality was patchy at best.
However, on seeing Voipfone's offering, it seemed worth a try, and after some testing we've decided to go the whole hog and move the business BT number to voip. The Voipfone service is amazing - using hardware handsets rather than the popular softphones makes a world of difference.
Now we have a phone system with multiple extensions, all in different geographic locations, and a full featured PBX that handles call queuing, extension transfers, music on hold, call waiting etc. We're paying a fraction of the cost of BT, but still have a failover option to landline if the broadband fails.
Typically our previous quarterly costs were in the hundreds, which compares with costs now measured in tens of pounds. And for that we get an amazing system, with the number everyone knows. Oh and free calls between offices, wherever they are.
Best of all, we're free of BT.
