The consensus seems to be that some kind of metal sheet behind the burner would be a Good Thing, so decided I couldn't rest until it was sorted. Luckily Coates the engineers had a good sized bit and it was only a few quid, so got it fitted. Now dying to light the fire so I can test it, but am in the midst of decorating so it'll have to wait...
